"And You Loved Him as You Loved Me" – Shavuot Night Tikun at the Negev Refugee Center. In anticipation of Shavuot, we invite you to an evening of a different kind – an honest and courageous encounter with the stories of girls who came to Israel as refugee children, and share their testimonies through the documentary "Walking Far." The film documents the journey of the girls from Eritrea through the Sinai deserts to life in the shadow of indifference in Israel. The film is an audio-visual project that moves between the past, present and unknown future, documenting five young women who went on an arduous journey from their homeland of Eritrea to the Israeli border. In their own voices, Arasma, Sham, Yosan, Mary and Sinai tell the story of the journey they went on as children, a story the likes of which has never been heard. As the loss of innocence, guilt and trauma resonate into the reality of their lives in Israel 2024, the choice of youth, family and community life is stronger than ever. Will the refugee experience forever hover over them? The film was produced with the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Israel. After the screening, we will have an open discussion and a short study of Jewish sources dealing with the relationship to the stranger, belonging, and human kindness. The event is open to the general public, and is held in partnership with the religious left.
